The following are new features for Exceed 2007. You should also view the new features for products included with Exceed.
Exceed and Exceed 3D support the latest X11 protocol, X11R7.1.
X Display Management Interface
The Exceed Display Controller Console (a Microsoft Management Console plug-in) provides an interface for setting parameters that control the assignment of display numbers. These parameters were previously accessible only by editing the Display Manager.ini file. The Display Controller is applicable only for terminal servers running Windows 2000 Server or Server 2003.
Hummingbird Profile Space Support
Exceed can now utilize Hummingbird Profile Space for Xstart (.xs) and Xsession (.ses) files. End users can save these configuration files to and retrieve them from one or more Profile Spaces.
If the Exceed Administrator chooses to install the Profile Space feature, Exceed Connection Manager displays Xstart and Xsession files from Profile Spaces as well as from local repositories, and users can use Hummingbird Neighborhood to launch Xstart and Xsession files.
Media Application Server (MAS) Support
Media Application Server (MAS) is an audio server that runs along side Exceed to enable quality presentation of real-time audio data from an X client. You can run MAS from the Hummingbird Connectivity group on the Windows Start menu by pointing to Exceed Tools and clicking MAS. MAS runs as an icon in your system tray.
Xinerama By exposing the Xinerama extension to X clients, Exceed and Exceed XDK benefit from the addition of the protocol extension, which makes X applications and window managers aware that two or more physical monitors are being used as one display.
XVideo The XVideo protocol extension allows video to be directly displayed through hardware acceleration and provides quality playback.
Damage, Xfixes, RandR and Composite Extensions Support for these extensions has been improved by implementing the latest X11R7.1 code.
Xprint Server To enable the Xprint extension, you must start the Exceed X server from a command line and enable the Xprint extension using the following syntax:
You can also run Xprint from Xstart using the Command box in the Xstart dialog box to enable the extension.
New Font Encoding Engine Exceed has a new encoding engine and offers encoding file (.enc) support for the recoding of Unicode-encoded fonts (iso 10646-1) to custom encodings.
XFD Utility Added The xfd X application lets you view the characters in a font as well as information such as character metrics. This utility is accessible from the Font List dialog box.
Reorganized Font Database
Reorganized Font Database Groups (.xdb Files)
Additional Font Support:
New Functionality in Virtual Desktop
The Virtual Desktop feature now offers options that enable support for the displaying of both Microsoft Windows-based applications and X applications running the native window manager. It also supports 12 virtual desktop work areas that you can name and use to manage both X windows (running Native Window Manager) and Microsoft windows. You can navigate the work areas using the F1 through F12 keys.
Hummingbird Neighborhood and Exceed Startup Files
You can now run Exceed Xstart (.xs) and Xsession (.ses) files from Hummingbird Neighborhood.
Application Window Properties Support
The following new application window properties are now supported by Exceed:
Supporting these properties, ensures that Exceed will interact more efficiently with UNIX and Linux desktop environments, including GNOME and KDE.
Exceed can now continue to render X applications while other events, such as displaying a drop-down menu, occur.
Additional Keysyms and Keyboard Files
Exceed now ships with additional keysyms, which are located in the keysyms.kbs file. It also ships with two new keyboard files:
Profile-Specific Toolbar Configuration
Exceed toolbar configuration is now Xconfig profile specific. When users load an Xconfig profile, the Exceed toolbar configuration saved in the profile determines the content of the toolbar.
Improved Multiple Monitor Support
The Prevent Center Dialog Across Monitors option in Xconfig ensures that when multiple monitors are used, dialogs are not displayed in the center of the viewing area (across two or more monitors). When this option is enabled, dialogs that would otherwise span two or more screens are displayed entirely within a single physical screen.
The XDMCP Display Manager Chooser window, which appears when starting X sessions in XDMCP Broadcast startup mode, now lets users manually specify a host if it is not listed in the list of available hosts. Users can also use column headings to sort the list of hosts.
A new option in the Xsession Options dialog box lets users launch a new Exceed session on an incremented display number for each Xsession profile they run. When this option is not enabled, Exceed uses existing sessions, if any exists, to host subsequent sessions launched by Xsession.
Elements of the Xconfig user interface have been reorganized and redesigned for improved ease of use.
Undocumented Protocol Extension Support
Exceed supports the following undocumented protocol extensions:
New Installation Guide Installation of all Hummingbird Connectivity products, including Exceed, is now addressed in the Hummingbird Connectivity Installation Guide, available in PDF format on all product CDs. You will also find information on Sconfig and other advanced installation procedures formerly located in the Exceed User's Guide in this new manual.
Discontinued Manuals The Exceed XDK and Exceed 3D user guides are no longer available. You will find the documentation for these Exceed products in the Exceed User's Guide.
In this section of the Hummingbird Connectivity 2007 Release Notes, you will find descriptions of issues related to Exceed that Hummingbird is aware of at the time of release.
You should also view the known issues for products included with Exceed.
Feature Compatibility with Composite Extension
If you enable the Composite or Damage extension, ensure that you disable Backing Stores (even for UNIX) and the Limit Window Exposures option. Failure to do so will result in unexpected behavior in your X application.
X Client Startup Wizard and Profile Space
The X Client Startup Wizard does not support Profile Space browsing. All files are saved in the Profile folder.
Connectivity Kerberos and Xstart x64
Only Xstart 32-bit functions with Kerberos.
