This section describes the new features available for Exceed 2006 products. For information on the features added in previous releases, contact Hummingbird Technical Support.
Hummingbird Connectivity 2006 products support Windows XP x64 and Windows Server 2003 x64. In addition to our native x64 products being available on these platforms, the 32-bit products (with the exception of NFS Maestro products) can also be used.
Hummingbird Connectivity products are IPv6 compliant.
Hummingbird Connectivity products (except NFS Maestro Server, NFS Maestro Gateway, and Connectivity Kerberos) now support an additional language option called Multilingual User Interface. This support is available on Windows XP/Server 2003 with one or more Language Interface Packs installed.
The current version of HostExplorer, Exceed PowerSuite, Exceed, and NFS Maestro Client automatically upgrade existing version 9 or 10 installations of Host Access Services.
Exceed PowerSuite now includes Exceed 3D.
RENDER extension is now enabled by default. This will improve performance with modern X applications.
Note: |
Ensure your video card drivers are up to date. |
The resize and rotate (RandR) extension informs X clients when screens are resized or rotated. This is useful when running Exceed through a remote desktop, and the screen resolution and color depth changes without forcing a server reset.
Drawing occurs in a manner that allows for flicker-free rendering and real transparency. A client can request that all drawing to window is redirected to an off-screen buffer. By using drawing requests from both the core protocol and the Render extension, the compositing manager can create special effects, such as translucent windows.
This extension is a collection of improvements in the core protocol. It changes how the X server and clients interact with fundamental parts of the window system.
Lets applications track modified regions of drawables.
XEvent interception extension intercepts input from core keyboard and pointing devices before the input is sent to X clients.
XKEYBOARD extension support for X11R6.8. You can optionally install configuration files.
Lets X clients monitor X resources used by all running X clients.
X Print extension support for X11R6.8.
Exceed supports new X11R6.8 extensions (namely XEVIE, DAMAGE, Composite, XFIXES, and 3D OpenGL) utilized in Project Looking Glass (PLG). PLG uses Java technology and was created to work with Solaris and Linux desktop environments. It provides an improved user experience with the desktop and with applications via 3D windowing and visualization capabilities.
On exit, if you select this option, your current session will be saved and restored the next time you run Exceed.
Note: |
Available with Native window manager and Xstart or local X clients. |
Exceed has new options that let users allow or refuse connections (treat as trusted/untrusted) by unknown X clients.
Exceed features Unicode UTF-8 copy/paste support.
New Unicode and TrueType Font Families
Over 300 standard X fonts are added in UTF-8 and TTF encoding.
Better Full Drag Support in X Server
Exceed X server supports X client drawing during move and size operations in Native window manager.
Improved desktop sharing quality with the support of HighColor modes.
You can exclude the taskbar to avoid overlapping the Windows taskbar and the UNIX taskbar.
You can fix the position of the virtual desktop window and name each workspace. Additionally, you can navigate the virtual desktop using the keyboard.
The log file (Exceed.log) includes information about the progress of the XDMCP connection when the logging feature is enabled in Xconfig (Troubleshooting page).
A new menu command "Insert Trace Comment" for troubleshooting purposes.
Performance Improvement for Local X Applications
This affects local X apps generated by MKS, Cygwin, NutCracker, Interix and other X development environments. Installation is optional under Shared Memory Transport and is unavailable on x64 platforms.
Improved Mandatory Settings Interface
An Administrator (or users with administrative privileges) can lock certain individual settings from within Xconfig so that users cannot change them. By default, all settings are initially available for configuration.
Terminal Emulator and Password Aging
New options are available for launching the Terminal Emulator (for example, if the prompt is from an unknown host, or for handling password aging and user-defined login scripts). Use the Network page in Xstart Settings to set these options and to access Terminal Emulator settings.
Xstart is interoperable with Exceed and Exceed onDemand allowing users to select either application to launch and manage X clients.
A new option in Xstart Settings (Wait for Command Completion) instructs Xstart to determine the status of the command sent to the host and, if necessary, wait for it to finish.
There are improvements to support new X extensions, internationalization, and Unicode support. Exceed XDK supports X11R6.8.
Exceed 3D XDK libraries are moved from Exceed 3D to Exceed XDK.
Exceed 3D includes various fixes and updates related to the X11R6.8 protocol, including OpenGL support for printing.
There is support for the more advanced OpenGL 1.4 commands available in recent OpenGL drivers.
The Hummingbird Directory Services Properties dialog box has been revised to include the following new and/or revised pages:
You can now configure name mappings to be stored on an LDAP server. To do this, you must first have access to a Windows 2000/2003 Active Directory domain controller or an LDAPv3-compliant server, which can be configured as a name mapping server on which to store name mapping information.
You can configure LDAP name mapping servers using the LDAP Name Mapping Server Properties dialog box, accessible from the Name Mapping page of the Hummingbird Directory Services Properties dialog box.
Profile Space management allows Administrators to manage and publish HostExplorer profiles to central or distributed repositories. Administrators can manage user access to Profile Spaces and the profiles they contain by making use of native permissions and policies, targeting profiles to specific users and groups.
The Hummingbird Profile Publishing Wizard guides Administrators through the process of selecting a profile and publishing it to a profile space.
HostExplorer Migration Wizard assists you with the task of migrating from other emulation products to HostExplorer. This tool converts user settings files created for Attachmate Extra! v6/7.1, IBM Personal Communications v5.7, and Wall Data Rumba v7.2 into HostExplorer profiles.
The Auto Macro Record feature lets you assign the macro record function to a keyboard key. You can use this key to record the macro, and then run the macro using another assigned key.
The glossary feature lets users define and maintain a list of keywords to represent frequently used text or commands and save the list as a glossary file (an HTML file in which the entries are active hyperlinks).
This feature lets a user share HostExplorer sessions with a remote machine, letting the operator of the remote computer view and operate the local PC.
You can use this entry in the hostex.ini file to instruct HostExplorer to run custom applications, scripts, or batch files before launching a session.
This feature lets users ensure that a connection is successful only if all the certificates in the certificate chain are signed in the store and the certificate is valid. You can allow the following certificate verification exception: Accept Self-Signed Server Certificates.
The session list toolbar displays a list of all active sessions. You can switch between active sessions by clicking a session button on the toolbar.
HostExplorer now lets you create or use a scheme for all session option categories. Every category includes a default scheme for each connection type.
This feature lets users select and run an existing Quick-Key, Quick Script or macro directly from the toolbar.
A series of interfaces that allow integrators to trap various HostExplorer events or operations and inject behaviour into a session.
HostExplorer has a new interface for mapping mouse functions that uses a two-column view to display current mouse action assignments.
Display Only Template Profiles
This feature lets you disable the display of default profiles and set a template profile as the default.
IHostExHost interface has a new method: SetToolbar (BSTR bstrName, BOOL bShow), where bstrName contains the name of the toolbar which should be loaded or unloaded. bShow causes the toolbar to be loaded when TRUE and unloaded when FALSE. When bstrName contains an empty string and bShow is FALSE, all active toolbars are unloaded.
Hummingbird Neighborhood opens displaying all available Profile Spaces. If there is only one Profile Space (the default), the opening window displays the contents of that space.
You can change the permissions of a remote file or directory if the host FTP server supports this feature and if you have sufficient administrative privileges.
This feature lets you continue downloading data in the event of an interrupted transfer. The transfer of data continues from the point of interruption.
You can save multiple lists of FTP or AS 400 synchronization items as a synchronization profile, which you can use to perform or to schedule synchronization tasks.
This feature lets Administrators grant access to one or more Profile Spaces to end users. Users can launch any profiles that are contained in the deployed Profile Space(s).
Xstart Classic, preserved in version 10, is discontinued in version 11.
Installation of X disassembler (Xdis) with Exceed is discontinued. Xdis is now available on the Hummingbird website. Xdis is a Java component and requires the Java Virtual Machine (available online from Sun Microsystems, Inc.).
This section describes issues that Hummingbird is aware of at the time of release.
InetD Configuration intially launches in the language of the user's operating system. If the user switches to another language using Language Chooser, restart the InetD service (or reboot) to reflect the new language in the user interface.
The following are known Windows Installer issues.
When multiple products install the same shortcut, only the last product is registered with the shortcut. Uninstalling that product removes the shortcut. However, it is easily recreated by selecting the Repair option in Program Maintenance for one of the remaining products.
During the upgrade to version 11, the Files In Use dialog box opens. This may indicate that the setup process is using certain files. Close the dialog box by clicking Ignore.
Upgrading a Personal Installation as Administrator
If versions 7-9 of the product were installed for the current user only, the user cannot upgrade the product as administrator. Use the following procedure to migrate the product settings to version 11.
Merging MUI Patch with an Administrative Image
Running setup /a from an administrative image where Multilingual User Interface is the setup language results in the MUI patch not being applied to the administrative image. To create a MUI-specific administrative image, you must manually merge the MUI patch.
To manually merge a MUI patch:
Product Access Control Enabled Installations (UsrSetup)
UsrSetup support for MUI is limited to shortcut tooltips and extensions. In addition, UsrSetup does not support MUI unless it is installed from an administrative image to which the MUI patch has already been applied.
Enabling GLX in Exceed to Exceed PowerSuite Migration
For the second and subsequent users of a machine upgrading to Exceed PowerSuite from Exceed, the GLX extension must be manually enabled.
You cannot create an administrative image for a Hummingbird Connectivity x64 product on a 32-bit operating system.
When installing a 32-bit Hummingbird Connectivity product on an x64 operating system, Hummingbird Connectivity User Settings does not launch automatically when a user logs on for the first time after the product has been installed. Instead, each user receives their personal user directory when an application is first launched.
Only Xstart 32-bit functions with Kerberos.
When migrating profiles and Quick Script files from previous versions, encrypted information (for example, 5250 auto sign-on: user ID and password) must be re-entered manually after upgrading.
After switching languages, you need to log off and on again, or reboot, to allow Windows Explorer to reload the selected language files.
Per-user and "All User" deployment projects should not be mixed on the same client machine.
If you deploy an SSL-enabled HostExplorer or Hummingbird FTP profile on a machine that has HostExplorer and SSL installed, and then uninstall the web-deployed product, you may need to re-install Connectivity SSL to restore functionality to remaining SSL-enabled profiles.
When migrating deployment projects created in previous versions, you need to move the project files manually from the Connectivity User Directory to the Deployment Wizard User Directory.
Projects Update Wizard supports updates between patches. To update projects between versions, rebuild the project using Project Deployment Wizard.
Customized auxiliary files in deployment projects created in previous versions may have to be re-enabled.
Profile shortcuts created in Hummingbird Neighborhood do not function on a 64-bit OS.
The following issues apply to Directory Services Explorer and Hummingbird Directory Services.
When you migrate Exceed or any NFS Maestro product from version 9 to version 11, the existing user profiles for NIS, NIS+, and LDAP may not be preserved. Users may need to recreate their profiles using version 11 of Hummingbird Directory Services.
The following applies to machines installed with NFS Maestro Server and any other NFS Maestro product, as well as machines installed with any NFS Maestro product and Exceed: when installing the current version product on a system that already has version 9.x of another product, ensure that the latest patches have been applied to the 9.x product.
Contact Technical Support to retrieve the latest available version patches.
Before you can bind to an LDAP server under Secure Socket Layer (SSL) authentication, you must install a CA certificate using Microsoft Internet Explorer. The CA certificate must come from the same root Certificate Authority that supplies certificates for the server. The version of Internet Explorer that you use must support SSL.
If you are using Windows 2000/XP, you must update your system before you install the certificate. For more information, see articles Q314864 and Q286158 in the Microsoft Product Support Services web site:
Directory Services Explorer and Hummingbird Directory Services support SSL connections to any LDAP servers that support SSL.
The table below lists incoming ports that are required for various Hummingbird Connectivity components, or protocols. To avoid conflicts, ensure other applications are not using these ports. If your organization uses a firewall, you can block or allow network traffic where appropriate.
