This section describes the new features available for Exceed 10 64-bit Edition products. For information on the features added in previous releases, contact your Hummingbird sales representative.
Note: |
Exceed 64-bit Edition products require either Intel Itanium or Itanium 2 processors. |
You can install the product with a Per User or Shared User directory.
During installation, you have the choice of creating a local cache of the installation source to simplify product updates or modifying the product.
After installation, Setup Wizard can launch Hummingbird Update or redirect users to a web page where they can download the latest product update.
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
The wizard lets administrators quickly export (for example, for backup purposes or hardware migration) and import the Hummingbird user files directory.
Hummingbird Metering Client Settings
This utility lets you modify the parameters of the Hummingbird Metering Client.
This utility lets you conveniently add or change locations for the product installation sources.
To improve usability, Help is now provided in compiled HTML format. With the exception of deployed product installations, most Help files now have a .chm extension.
Xstart and Xsession options are re-organized in the user interface that is backward compatible with files created by previous versions. This improvement includes a new Xweb Wizard feature: users can "publish" existing Xstart or Xsession profiles to web servers. Xstart now includes a local application startup method.
The Xstart interface from version 9 remains available (as Xstart Classic).
This is a new component that lets users efficiently manage profiles in Exceed Connection Manager (ECM), a Windows Explorer type of interface. It is a centralized database and interface that lets you manage and organize Xstart (.xs), Xsession (.ses), and Xconfig (.xcfg) files. Full drag and drop capability is supported.
The wizard lets you launch X applications from Web browsers. This feature is an enhancement of the Xweb (Broadway) technology introduced in the X11R6.3 release. The Xweb wizard lets users create web pages that launches X applications using existing Xstart profiles. Web pages can be published on web servers. Users can create a web page that launch X applications in embedded mode (that is, embedded in web browsers) or in stand-alone mode. The HTML code is generated by the wizard; no configuration is required on the UNIX or Linux host. Optionally, you can modify the HTML to suit your particular requirements.
Version 10 features an intuitive and simplified integration of Connectivity Secure Shell in Xstart. Novice users can easily create a secure connection to a UNIX machine without having to configure Connectivity Secure Shell. Advanced features will benefit experienced users.
Several enhancements increase the performance of Exceed and reduce system resource usage. You can also limit windows exposure in Xconfig to reduce network traffic.
Exceed supports the latest input device from 3DConnexion: SpaceBall 5000.
Exceed supports the Sun Overlay extension.
This feature lets users specify, in the Xstart profile, the workspace in which Exceed should display the X application. This feature is applicable only to the Native Window Manager.
Users can configure Exceed to terminating a connection if:
Administrators can use this feature to conserve the host resources by programmatically terminate unused or idling connections.
The new startup method "Local Application" in Xstart lets you launch Windows applications and local X applications. Profiles are created with the familiar .xs file extension. Local Application replaces Wstart.
You can customize Exceed to access fonts from a common, network-shared location. This reduces problems resulting from the physical distribution of fonts, and the subsequent reconfiguration of Exceed.
The user interface for HWM is internationalized. HWM is structured in a manner that facilitates localization.
An evaluation version of Exceed onDemand Client and Exceed onDemand Server for Windows is included with Exceed and Exceed PowerSuite products.
Exceed supports the latest version of Motif from OSF. Libraries and header files are provided.
Exceed supports OpenGL version 1.2, GLX 1.3 (if supported by the graphics adapter), and GLX 1.4 source code, providing improved performance and programmability.
New features for Hummingbird Directory Services and Directory Services Explorer are described below.
When you use the SASL/GSSAPI authentication method to bind to an Active Directory domain, all LDAP transactions between you and the server are now secured. Prior to version 10, only the authentication operation was secured.
In addition to the RFC 2307 and AD4UNIX schemas, Hummingbird Directory Services and Directory Services Explorer now support the following schemas:
If the domain you want to bind to uses a nonstandard LDAP schema, Hummingbird Directory Services and Directory Services Explorer let you customize your LDAP profile to reflect the schema. You can customize the following components of your profile:
Class Names for Common Objects The classes that represent the User, Group, Policy, Automount, Host, Network, and RPC objects in the domain.
DNs for Common Objects The Distinguished Names (DNs) for common objects in the directory information tree.
User Attribute Names The names of attributes in the User container.
Because different implementations of LDAP use different schemas, some LDAP domains store information about how the domain is configured. LDAP clients can retrieve this information to configure themselves to reflect the schema adopted by the domain.
If the LDAP domain you want to bind to has one or more profile servers, Hummingbird Directory Services and Directory Services Explorer can retrieve the configuration information to automatically set up your LDAP profile.
Hummingbird Directory Services and Directory Services Explorer automatically refresh your profile whenever the configuration information on the profile server expires.
The following new bind and query options are available in the LDAP Advanced Options dialog box:
If you bind to an LDAP domain using the Simple authentication method, you can now specify any of the following credentials and the order in which they are to be used:
When you use LDAP as your directory service, you can now specify one of the following password verification methods:
This feature lets users group a wide variety of settings into a "theme" that can then be applied to any HostExplorer session. HostExplorer includes themes for most major emulators. This feature improves the migration path from other emulators.
Users can edit the HostExplorer menus and customize them to suit their requirements. Users can save their menu customizations as schemes.
Users can edit the way that the Session Properties dialog box displays its contents. They can rename and rearrange categories and individual settings pages, and they can save their customizations to Session Properties as schemes.
Users can assign custom sounds to HostExplorer (such as, connecting, disconnecting, and file transfer) and to Host events. Users can save their customizations as schemes.
Users can set up shortcuts for long words or sentences. When a shortcut is typed on the screen, HostExplorer automatically replaces it with the preset word or sentence.
Enhanced user interface lets users configure multiple LUs or pools of LUs within an emulation session.
The user interface is updated to reflect the latest Windows operating systems enhancements.
The HostExplorer Global Features dialog box is redesigned and offers more options.
The new Connection dialog box offers a streamlined and integrated interface that displays useful information messages during the connection operations.
You can now use this dialog box to directly access the Session Properties dialog box and to establish an immediate connection to a host.
The new application, HostExplorer Management Console, lets administrators selectively lockdown certain features of the emulator.
This system function lets users clone running sessions.
The Report Wizard lets users define print areas and screen navigation rules. With these rules, HostExplorer automatically inspects multiple screens to collect and format the data in order to print it or send it to Excel, Word, or a file.
Additional text replacers symbols are available in the Print Screen Options dialog box.
Users can launch several sessions into the same terminal window. Use tabs, a drop-down menu, or previous and next arrows to switch from one session to another.
Users can dynamically define Secure Shell tunnel parameters within the HostExplorer user interface.
These are standard Windows keyboard shortcuts for copying and pasting within a VT session (instead of the Ctrl key sending an escape sequence to the host).
This functionality offers a more granular level of control for the keep-alive methods used by the emulator.
Lets users determine HostExplorer behavior when the operating system goes into standby mode.
This new terminal type provides user with a default Linux terminal mode.
This feature provides additional control over the keyboard locking mechanism as well as the Preserve Entry mode.
Field Outlining lets the host outline the input field and provide users with a visible indicator of the current input fields.
Deployment Wizard can be installed independently of HostExplorer (for use with Hummingbird FTP, Connectivity Secure Shell, etc.).
Deployment Wizard can now deploy profiles generated with 5250 File Transfer Wizard.
HostExplorer can be deployed as a window in addition to an ActiveX Control and Active Document (supporting multiple toolbars, customized menus, etc.).
In addition to Kerberos and Secure Shell, Hummingbird FTP supports SSL encryption and authentication for maximum security.
The table below lists incoming ports that are required for various Hummingbird Connectivity components, or protocols. To avoid conflicts, ensure other applications are not using these ports. If your organization uses a firewall, you can block or allow network traffic where appropriate.
The following applications or functionality are not available with the 64-bit version of certain products:
This section describes issues that Hummingbird is aware of at the time of release.
If you enable per-user directories and attempt to import user settings without having first launched an application that triggers the installation of the per-user directories, Files and Settings Transfer Wizard will cease to function.
Ensure that valid version 10 user settings exist on the machine before attempting to import.
InetD Configuration intially launches in the language of the user's operating system. If the user switches to another language using Language Chooser, restart the InetD service (or reboot) to reflect the new language in the user interface.
The following are known Windows Installer issues:
Upgrading a Personal Installation as Administrator
If versions 7-9 of the product were installed for the current user only, the user cannot upgrade the product as administrator. Use the following procedure to migrate the product settings to version 10.
If a previous version of the product is installed (for example, HostExplorer or Exceed, along with Host Access Services and Connectivity Secure Shell), and you are migrating to version 10, do one of the following:
Installing Terminal Services on Windows Server 2000 or 2003
If a product is installed with shared user profiles on a Windows Server 2000 or 2003 machine without Terminal Services, do not subsequently install Terminal Services in application mode.
Do not share user settings on Terminal Server 2003 with Terminal Services.
Shared User Installation on Windows NT 4 NTFS
Administrators should manually change permissions to allow non-administrators write access.
Viewing Help with Windows NT 4.0 requires Internet Explorer v4.01 (or later) and the HTML Help viewer files. These files are distributed in Hhupd.exe. If you have administrator privileges, Hummingbird Setup Wizard automatically installs Hhupd.exe, if necessary. However, if a user installs Exceed on NT 4.0 as a normal user, Hhupd.exe is not installed because the user must have administrator privileges.
At the time of version 10 release, NVIDIA products (for example, GeForce and Quadro series video cards) do not support Exceed 3D Direct Rendering mode.
The 5250 Data Transfer Wizard and Hummingbird Neighborhood integrated 5250 Data Transfer require DES encryption.
Note: |
To get the necessary support for DES encryption, you require hecypher.dll which you can obtain from the Hummingbird web site at: | |
|
http://www.hummingbird.com/hecypher64/request.html |
When migrating from version 9 (or earlier) to version 10, encrypted information (for example, 5250 auto sign-on: user ID and password) in profiles and QuickScript files is not migrated to the new encryption algorithm used in version 10. Therefore, users must re-enter the values by means of the user interface after upgrading the product to version 10.
The Use Saved Window State setting is ignored if you start a session shortcut specifically set to open the session in minimized or maximized state.
"What's This?" functionality (HostExplorer toolbar or keyboard) is not supported in version 10. Related customizations migrated from version 9 are also not supported.
After switching languages, you need to log out and log in to Windows, or reboot, to force Windows Explorer to reload the selected language files.
Projects Update Wizard supports updates of projects between minor versions, that is, between patches. Updating projects between major versions, for example 9.x to 10.0, is not supported. Rebuild the project using Deployment Wizard instead of Projects Update Wizard.
Due to the addition of themes and numerous schemes in HostExplorer, your Auxiliary Files settings in Deployment Wizard need to be checked for deployment projects (if they were customized) created with an earlier version of Deployment Wizard. In some cases, your old Auxiliary Files settings will not be retained and you will have to enable some files again.
The Hummingbird component deployment installer always runs using the language specified in the initial installation, regardless of subsequent changes made in Language Chooser.
Language Chooser affects the language for all deployed or installed products on the same PC.
Language settings made in a Hummingbird deployment are respected only on first install. For subsequent installations of deployed profiles, the client machine retains whatever language settings were set for the first deployment. The user on the client machine is able to change the language at any time (if this option was enabled during the first deployment).
If you want to install a Connectivity product from a CD on a machine that has already run a web-deployed version of that product, you should uninstall the web-deployed product before proceeding with the installation from the CD. You can run a web-deployed session again after the CD-based installation is complete.
If you have a web-deployed Connectivity product on the same machine as Host Access Services, you must uninstall the web-deployed product before uninstalling Host Access Services.
If you enable Metering on the Metering page of the Deployment Wizard, the values you specify will replace existing values in the client machine's registry. This can cause unwanted results if not used with care. For example, if you enable metering and leave the URL box blank, then, upon deploying this project, the client machine will stop participating in license reporting (metering).
If you are launching a web-deployed HostExplorer session in the Netscape web browser, make sure that the Deployment Project name contains no spaces.
To ensure that a printer profile connects, users have to select a specific printer when creating a printer session profile. HostExplorer Print Services cannot utilize the Windows default printer.
When creating a profile on a service in the HEPS Console, you may encounter a Printer Not Found message when connecting to a session. If you receive this error, the session is not connected because the Windows default printer is not recognized by Print Services.
To resolve the connection, select a user-specific printer. This setting remains in effect until the printer is removed. Each time the printer is changed, this setting must be manually changed in order to update the printer destination.
When File Transfer Mode is set to AutoSelect in Hummingbird Neighborhood, Hummingbird FTP sets the transfer type to binary, and then handles CR/LF expansion for files it detects as text. DEC/VMS servers send text files without line feeds if the transfer mode was set to binary. Therefore, CR/LF expansion fails. Either use Hummingbird Neighborhood Options/FTP Transfer File Types association to determine the transfer type, or prevent Hummingbird FTP from proceeding with the download (forcing an abort of the current transfer and restarting it as ASCII download) by adding the following key to Heshell.ini:
Default value is 1allow downloading text files in binary (Image) mode.
The following issues apply to Directory Services Explorer and Hummingbird Directory Services.
When you migrate Exceed or any NFS Maestro product from version 9 to version 10, the existing user profiles for NIS, NIS+, and LDAP may not be preserved. Users may need to recreate their profiles using version 10 of Hummingbird Directory Services.
The following problem applies to any combination of NFS Maestro products and any combination of NFS Maestro products with Exceed: when you install a version 10 product on a system that already has version 9.x of another product, you must also apply the latest patch for the 9.x product.
For example, if you want to install Exceed 10 on a system that has version 9 of NFS Maestro Server, you must also apply the latest 9.x patch for NFS Maestro Server.
Contact Technical Support to retrieve the latest available 9.x patches.
Before you can bind to an LDAP server under Secure Socket Layer (SSL) authentication, you must install a CA certificate using Microsoft Internet Explorer. The CA certificate must come from the same root Certificate Authority that supplies certificates for the server. The version of Internet Explorer that you use must support SSL.
If you are using Windows 2000/XP, you must update your system before you install the certificate. For more information, see articles Q314864 and Q286158 in the Microsoft Product Support Services web site:
Directory Services Explorer and Hummingbird Directory Services support SSL connections to any LDAP servers that support SSL.
If you bind as a registered user to an Active Directory LDAP domain and authenticate yourself using SASL, Hummingbird Directory Services and Directory Services Explorer by default use your Windows account credentials for authentication to the LDAP server. However, if you are running Windows 98/Me, you need to enable NTLM security services before SASL authentication can work.
To enable NTLM security services:
